We need to make our own 20 sec film to response to the artist we are interested in for this homework.
The artist we chose:
Tom Sachs is a contemporary American artist whose work both addresses and participates in the fetishization of consumer culture拜物教of消费文化. Employing a variety of materials, including foamcore, bronze, plywood, automotive paint, and glue, Sachs often reconstructs or repurposes luxurious or iconic brands and objects from history and popular culture. I “I want labor to be the point, because everything in our lives is miraculously made with no idea of how it’s done,” he said of his work. “As an active and critical consumer, and as someone who has attempted to make the flawless and failed, I wanted a transparency of construction here. If we know how it is made and how it falls apart, we will know how to rebuild it.
There are so many things to look at in his art work. he repurposed consumer goods to Reconstruct and deride luxury culture. for instance he used the cardboard prada packaging to create a prada toilet or something.
And also, he tried to remind people of production techniques，like he kept the traces of how those sculptures were made. made it looks kinda rough but obviously handmade. And he think that’s a way to connect to the object to make them by hand rather than machine. like handmade things make people going back to the nature to create value, like to convey a sense of human labor.
We chose this Artist because we like the way he combines art and design in his works. And the things he reflects on the society and culture, which he treats with a heavy dose of humour and irony, are so riveting and we want to use our way to response. The elements he used, hello kitty, NASA, McDonald are also very attractive.
And here is our final work:
As we are all online course students, we divided 20 sec into five parts and give the theme of space exploration. It was hard for us to share a doc around five people, so we just make our own films separately and finally put them together. We tried to connect with each other and got inspired from each other, that’s how our teamwork was going on.
We tried different methods of filming, there are stop-motion, 3D modelling, motion graphics and drawing so forth. I was responsible for the third part which shows an astronaut is defying hello kitty as a god. I got this inspiration from one of tom’s work called hello kitty nativity. And the space travel background looks like newspapers cuttings which I response to the idea of handmade of Sachs.
It was my first time to use camera to show the movement, which is quite hard and I think the movement of final result looks a bit not natural, my AE skill still needs improvement.
I put a light in red brown once, but it looks not as good as black and white colour tone. Black and white gives a sense of technology. So I gave the light up, I’d like to try it in the future’s work tho.
