Traditional animation

This rotation focuses on 2d drawn animation, looking at how to create movement using frame-by-frame animation.

Lightbox, animation paper and peg-bar

Principles of animation

  • straight ahead animation (draw frame by frame):

we were set to a words generator to create 2 random words as the inspiration.

here are words I got
here is my straight ahead work
  • Pose to pose ( draw key frame first then in-between):

We need to draw a simple head and face with 3 key expressions:

here is my pose to pose animation
  • Timing and spacing (make animation looks more organic):
bouncing ball test
  • Ease in and ease out (more organic):
easy in and easy out

Reflections:

Personally I think pose to pose way is easier than straight ahead, as I only need think creatively for the key frames, then I can draw the in-between without thinking. But there is difficulty like if the keyframe was not so extreme, it would not be looks great. The action needs to be adjusted a bit during drawing process, so may need redo the one of keyframes sometime. Which makes it complicated too. And also for Lightbox, it is sometimes hard to distinguish the line between the previous one and present one, I lost a line once which makes it lost for lots if frame. At last, I redraw them again. Traditional animation is really hard for me. It needs practice drawing for a long time.
