Character design

We were exposed to key fundamentals to consider when designing characters, including: the use of shape to communicate character traits and emotion, expressive design using inanimate objects, and a brainstorming session to generate a character idea based on 3 prompt options: an inanimate object, a song, and a season (to be used as imaginatively and flexibly as you’d like!). Using Adobe Photoshop, we are set to produce one character sheet of their own design, working from sketches to colour thumbnails and resulting in a final character 2 view turnaround.

MONDAY:

task

and here is my sketches:

‘Steal the shape’ allows us to exaggerate character’s appearance to make it looks more interesting.

The main event:

I chose the prompt of winter, then I drew some elements which related to winter in my mind, and also some sketches.

Blue must be the first colour popped up when we think about winter. However, I didn’t want the colour tune of my character to be cold, I wanna it be quite warm. Because of the cold of winter, we are allowed to find how warm our home is, how bright the light is, how tasty the hot chocolate is.

At last, I chose the little girl with scarf in the middle as my character sheet.

Moodboard:

Some poses:

In order to show her personality, I drew in a exaggerated way too. She is kinda casual, lively, with a good sense of humour, and also feel cold a lot. So she wears very thick.

Colour thumbnails:

Outline of 2 view:

It was quite hard to keep them all the same (sometimes lost lines, just like the boots)

Final character look:

It’s hard for me to find where to draw the shadow, as my basis of drawing skill is so weak. I hope I got them right. It is quite interesting to draw our own character, to start with shape which made the process easier.

If I have more time, I would draw she in the busy street scene, with warm street lamp, which shows more the people’s life in winter. Maybe add more festival elements, and I would add marshmallow in the hot chocolate, now looks more like coffee…
