Visual Narrative -Portrait Collage

Week 1

We were introduced to this project and doing Loop De Loop to try different materials of making animation.

sand animation

It was hard to use sand because it is easy to be moved and the scenes would be really messy, but the transition would be fairly smooth because of that.

LOOP DE LOOP

We tried different materials to create an animated sequence, but I lost those outputs when I lost my phone and ended up using digital way to finish the clip.

Here is the result:

Flying birds

In order to make this sequence more interesting, I tried to use elements from the artist Yayoi Kusama’s creations to make some experimental animations, because Yayoi Kusama’s colours are very vibrant and the use of polka dots is very impactful, and I wanted to show this motion graphic.

For the overall style of mixed-miedia, I wanted to do a collage-like combination of newspaper and magazine elements with a flat illustration style.

Production process:

In the mask making workshop I was inspired, masks can be used as solids to cover up imperfections on the face, or as non-physicals such as make-up or plastic surgery. I wanted to make a short film about a girl’s day, from waking up to going to sleep, skincare and makeup dieting and constant anxiety. For those who are disciplined this is a daily routine, but for some it is a painful struggle every second, we can’t tell if it’s right or wrong, but the pleasure and pain it brings is real. A mask can also be an emotion and a way of life that we wear to better ourselves, we can’t say it’s fake, it could just be a side of our personality. After talking to Jane about the idea, we decided on the title of the project, photofit, which is a double entendre to show the many facets of human.

Sketches:

I first found the model for the protagonist, my flatmate, who allowed me to observe her features at all times and thus character design, as well as to discuss with her issues related to appearance anxiety. Because I wanted an illustrative style of expression, I used a relatively smooth brush for digital drawing.

Storyboard:

Because I wanted to show a day in the life of a girl, I drew various scenes from the day in the storyboard, all focused on the face. Even though in the process, some parts were removed when they became too redundant.

In the process of thinking about it, I’ve always wanted to try a form of expression, such as dividing the scenes into two halves, half of the girl’s lazy life and half of her refined life, both with the same dynamic but contrasting, like the main male and female picture going on at the same time in mv of we don’t talk anymore, but mine is shown on the same person.

After discussing with tutor, she encouraged me to experiment more, so I finished the ‘wake up’ clip with a half-skin and half-mask look. After presenting 10s of experimental work, tutor suggested that I remove the background music and find the fit sound by myself.

During production, I found that 20 seconds was not enough to show all the scenes, so I made some trade-offs, added some stop-motion shots to the credits and tried mixed media.
